Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you want to know about VITAGEN and more.

Why should VITAGEN be taken daily?
VITAGEN should be taken daily to maintain a balance of good and harmful bacteria in the gut. When a good balance is maintained, we feel fit and healthy. VITAGEN also provides a constant supply of Lactobacillus to our intestinal flora which, together with the good bacteria in our body, can suppress the harmful bacteria and prevent them from causing harm to our health.
Why is VITAGEN different from other cultured milk drinks?
VITAGEN is formulated with 2 strains of clinically proven live probiotic cultures i.e. Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus paracasei for better digestion. The research study conducted by Pusat Perubatan UKM (PPUKM) under the supervision of Associate Prof. Dr. Raja Affendi bin Raja Ali on VITAGEN's 2 strains of live probiotic cultures has been proven to reduce constipation and improve intestinal transit time (shorter toilet time). On-going research study also shows positive results on enhancing immunity system.
What is the difference between VITAGEN Regular and Less Sugar?
Every bottle of VITAGEN contains billions of live probiotic cultures for better digestion. VITAGEN Regular comes in a line-up of real fruit flavours and our signature LB flavour. The product has 0% fat and no preservatives. For those opting for a lower sugar intake, there is VITAGEN Less Sugar, which maintains all the benefits of VITAGEN with 30% lower sugar content compared to VITAGEN Regular.
How many bottles of VITAGEN should one drink a day?
Take at least two bottles of VITAGEN a day to meet the body's daily requirement of good bacteria. However, if there are symptoms of intestinal discomfort such as constipation, diarrhea, ulcers, fatigue, bloating, belching, bad breath, heartburn or even nausea, taking more than two bottles of VITAGEN can help to reduce such disturbances.
When is the best time to take VITAGEN?
It is ideal to drink VITAGEN after meals when the acidity of the stomach is lower. Low acidity in the stomach helps the Lactobacillus in VITAGEN reach the intestines alive.
Why is VITAGEN Less Sugar more expensive than VITAGEN Regular?
Producing VITAGEN Less Sugar is not merely as simple as removing sugar from VITAGEN Regular, as the good bacteria in each bottle of VITAGEN requires sugar to thrive before they reach your gut. Extensive research and development was conducted before producing the Less Sugar range to ensure we don’t compromise bacteria count.
How long can VITAGEN be kept at room temperature?
VITAGEN is a pasteurised cultured milk drink and needs to be stored below 4 degrees Celsius. The bacteria count in a bottle of VITAGEN will deteriorate if it is exposed to room temperature for too long. We recommend that VITAGEN be consumed as soon it is brought out of the refrigerator. After opening, VITAGEN can last for 2 to 3 hours.
After purchasing from the supermarket, how long can VITAGEN be left at room temperature before needing refrigeration?
Not more than 2 to 3 hours.
How long can I keep VITAGEN?
VITAGEN can be kept for about six weeks if stored properly at a temperature of 4 degrees Celcius and below.
Is VITAGEN only for children?
Everyone regardless of age can enjoy the benefits of drinking VITAGEN. It is a healthy drink for the whole family.
Can VITAGEN be given to children who have coughs?
Generally, parents do not give cold drinks to children having coughs. VITAGEN can be taken out from refrigerator and placed at room temperature for a short period before consumption so that it will be less chilled when consumed. (Recommended to not leave the product in room temperature more than 2-3 hours).
I am worried about letting my children take cold drinks.
For parents who are worried about their children taking cold drinks, they can take VITAGEN out of the fridge before a meal. By the time the children have finished eating, VITAGEN will be around room temperature. (Recommended to not leave the product in room temperature more than 2-3 hours).
Is it alright to give VITAGEN to one-year-old babies?

Yes, it is alright to give VITAGEN to babies aged 1 year and even as young as a few months old, depending on the health and stool condition of the child. Start with a small amount of VITAGEN diluted with lukewarm water (e.g. one spoon of VITAGEN diluted with two spoons of lukewarm water). The aim of taking VITAGEN is to provide viable Lactobacillus and not to replace mother's milk or milk formulas.

Although VITAGEN is fit for consumption for all ages, it is still best to seek your doctor's advice. As VITAGEN is a pasteurised product that needs to be kept under refrigeration at all times, it is a good measure for the adult to taste the product first before serving the baby.

Symptoms include cramps, bloating, diarrhea and gas.
Can people with lactose intolerance drink VITAGEN?

What are live Lactobacillus cultures from Chr. Hansen's Lab, Denmark?
Live Lactobacillus cultures are beneficial bacteria exerting health benefits in our digestive system, especially the bowel and colon. They are strong enough to withstand digestive fluid such as bile and acidic stomach juices and survive the journey through the stomach to the large intestine alive. They also inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria in the intestines. Chr. Hansen's Lab is known as a world leading biotechnology company which has been supplying high quality bacterial cultures to the dairy industry worldwide for over 100 years.
What is the level of good and harmful bacteria in a healthy colon?
The bacteria in a healthy colon should ideally be at least 85% good bacteria and not more than 15% harmful bacteria. However, a typical colon bacterial count in our society shows only 15% good bacteria and 85% harmful bacteria. Therefore, drinking VITAGEN replenishes the number of good bacteria. When Lactobacillus combines with the good in our body, they multiply in numbers and become plentiful and flourish. As a result, the environment in the colonic flora becomes unsuitable for harmful bacteria to grow.
What causes separation/decolourisation in VITAGEN?
The separation/decolourisation in VITAGEN can be caused by any of the following factors:-
  1. The bottle's seal may been tampered with;
  2. A break in the cold chain (the product in question may have been exposed to high temperature. Being a pasteurised product, it must be kept chilled at all times);
  3. The aluminum foil cap on the bottle may not be 100% sealed properly.
Why is there white sponge-like tissue in VITAGEN?
A foreign white particle in VITAGEN is not a tissue. VITAGEN is a pasteurised cultured milk drink that has to be chilled at all times. The pasteurisation process will kill the pathogenic microorganism and make the product safe to drink. However, any pasteurised product needs to be stored at a certain chill temperature to prevent the yeast/mould from growing and multiplying. Under the Malaysian Food Act, there is a marginal percentage of yeast/mould (microorganism) allowance for any pasteurised product.
Are you introducing any new product(s)?
Currently, we have the widest range of cultured milk drinks in the market namely VITAGEN Regular and VITAGEN Less Sugar to offer to our consumers. We will continue to focus on our current range for the time being.
Where can we find nutritional information on VITAGEN?
You may find VITAGEN's nutritional information on our packaging labels.
Are your bottles recyclable?
Yes they are, and we have vendors who recycle discarded VITAGEN bottles into other products. Over time we have also found that children and adults have learnt how to upcycle VITAGEN bottles into a variety of craft projects.
Are VITAGEN bottles BPA-free?

BPA stands for bisphenol A. BPA is an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1960s. BPA is found in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. Polycarbonate plastics are often used in containers that store food and beverages, such as water bottles. Epoxy resins are used to coat the inside of metal products, such as food cans, bottle tops and water supply lines.

VITAGEN bottles are made using food grade polystyrene plastic that does not contain polycarbonate or epoxy resins.
